Turtle Nests

This video shows the tracks and nesting place a turtle created in an effort to bury her eggs on the beach in La Ventana/El Sargento, Baja California Sur. However, due to the dry season in 2020-21, she was unable to create the cylindrical hole she needed to place her eggs deep enough in the sand. (Yeah, another reason 2020 sucked.) Still, when you see two, parallel tracks like this on a beach, help a sister out! Contact local organizations (or mark the nest for protection yourself) like Grupo de Tortugas in La Ventana. They're an informal group of local people who do their best to protect the turtle egg nests on the beach. If you're lucky enough to see a turtle laying her eggs, please, GIVE A MAMA SOME SPACE! Turtles need total calm (at least in their field of vision) until they start laying eggs–any disturbances in the force and she's outta there, and she's taking her unlaid eggs with her!

How to Help Protect Turtle Nests

Please don't drive on beaches where turtles lay their eggs–it kills them! If you have to drive on the beach, please drive above the 200 foot/50 meter stretch of sand that runs along the shoreline.

Baby Turtle's First Steps

Here's a little video my parents' shot of a baby turtle making its way to the water in La Ventana. I'm not sure how many siblings it has, or what happened to them. But at least you can see another track nearby!

The Coral Reefs of La Ventana Bay

This article, written by Mary Sim & Natalie Libansky, explores one of the critical ecosystems of Ventana Bay. In particular, they describe how rock-based reefs provide a critical habitat for life there.
Maybe we can do something similar here as they've done in Cabo Pulmo?!
