The Sustainability Collective & Exchange: An Overview

Inspired by the people and nature I encountered in Baja California Sur, I've created this website to collect and share tips for sustainable living. I was also inspired to start a study abroad and exchange program for college students.

The La Ventana/El Sargento/Los Planes region is very special. From the Isla Cerralvo (aka Jacques Cousteau Island) across the bay to the beaches and mountains, aficianodos of all kinds have come to love it. While modern fishers have called the region home for many years, and indigenous people for thousands of years before that, the area has seen a huge influx of new inhabitants. This is putting a visible strain on the ecosystems in the region. Thankfully, many of these newcomers brought an eco-minded or environmentally sustainable vision with them, or perhaps, the land calls forth such a mind-set in all who come here. (I know that I felt a surprising and powerful desire to help protect the ecology of this space as a visitor back in 2010!) Since that time, I’ve become increasingly interested in finding ways to help preserve this amazing place. So now, I am collaborating with some of the many people promoting environmentally sustainable development to create an international sustainability collective and exchange.

The program is designed to help people explore and learn about the many ways that we can, and indeed we must, live in harmony with the Earth. The hard-working Earth stewards in the the region have a lot to share with us. The goal of our program is to expose both students and local inhabitants who wish to live more sustainably to the many tools at our disposal, and to find new ones. We also want them to share in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the area.
